What Is Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)?

Tamoxifen is a SERM that selectively blocks estrogen receptors in certain tissues while acting as a weak estrogen agonist in others. In breast tissue, Tamoxifen is a potent estrogen antagonist, which is why it is the first-line treatment for gynecomastia prevention during steroid cycles. At the hypothalamus and pituitary, it blocks estrogen’s negative feedback, stimulating increased LH and FSH production, which makes it effective for post-cycle testosterone recovery.

Unlike aromatase inhibitors such as Arimidex or Aromasin, Tamoxifen does not reduce estrogen levels. It blocks estrogen’s effects at specific receptor sites. This is an important distinction because some estrogen is beneficial for joint health, lipid profiles, and overall wellbeing.

Uses During Cycle

Gynecomastia Prevention

When running aromatising compounds like Testosterone or Dianabol, Tamoxifen at 10-20mg daily can prevent the development of gynecomastia by blocking estrogen at the breast tissue receptor. Many users keep Tamoxifen on hand as a “safety net” even when running an AI, in case gyno symptoms appear.

Anadrol-Specific Use

Tamoxifen is particularly useful during Anadrol cycles because Anadrol causes estrogenic side effects through non-aromatisation pathways that AIs cannot address. Tamoxifen at 20mg daily is the preferred approach for managing Anadrol-related gynecomastia.

PCT Protocol

Tamoxifen is most commonly used in combination with Clomid for post-cycle therapy. The standard combination PCT runs for 4 weeks: Tamoxifen 20mg daily plus Clomid 50mg daily. Tamoxifen vs Clomid

Both are SERMs used for PCT, but they have different strengths. Tamoxifen is more effective at blocking estrogen in breast tissue (better for gyno prevention) and tends to have milder side effects. Clomid is generally considered more potent at stimulating LH/FSH production for testosterone recovery. Most experienced users combine both at lower doses rather than using either alone at high doses, as this provides more complete recovery with fewer side effects.

Side Effects

Tamoxifen is generally well-tolerated. Possible side effects include hot flushes, mild nausea, headaches, and in rare cases, visual disturbances. Side effects are typically milder than those experienced with Clomid. Long-term use may affect lipid profiles, though Tamoxifen is generally considered more favourable for cholesterol than AIs.
